LESA — Terms and Conditions of Service

For Parents and Legal Guardians

Effective Date: 14 August 2026 | Last Updated: 23 July 2026 | Version 1.0

Table of contents
Table of contents

Welcome to LESA

These Terms and Conditions (the “Terms”) form a legally binding agreement between you, the parent or legal guardian (“you”), and LESA ehf. (“LESA,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), the company that owns and operates the LESA mobile application, the website at https://www.lesa.app, the LESA Stories engine, the parent dashboard, and any related services (collectively, the “Service”). LESA is a reading game for children, for use at home by families. Because our users are minors, these Terms are written for the adult who authorises the child’s access. We have tried to write these Terms in plain English so that you understand exactly what you are agreeing to on behalf of your child. Words written in capital letters in quotation marks are defined in these Terms or in the Children’s Privacy Policy. By creating an account, ticking the consent boxes, or otherwise allowing your child to access the Service, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these Terms and our Children’s Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not create an account and do not let your child use the Service.

  1. Introduction and Parental Consent

1.1 Who This Agreement Is Between

LESA is a reading game intended for children. We do not enter into a contract with the child user. This agreement is between LESA and the adult who authorises the child's access — the child's parent or legal guardian.

1.2 Why Parental Authorisation Is Required

Children's online services are governed by laws designed to protect minors, including:

  • the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"), which requires verifiable parental consent before we may collect, use, or disclose personal information from a child under the age of 13;

  • the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), including the rules that apply specifically to children's data (sometimes called "GDPR-K"), which require parental authorisation for children below the applicable age of digital consent (between 13 and 16 depending on the EU/EEA Member State; 13 in Iceland), as implemented in Iceland by Act No. 90/2018 on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data;

  • the UK Age Appropriate Design Code (Children's Code) and equivalent codes in other markets where we operate; and

  • any other child-protection or data-protection laws that apply where you and your child live.

You confirm that:

  • you are at least 18 years of age (or the age of legal majority where you live);

  • you are the parent or legal guardian of each child for whom you create a profile;

  • you have full legal authority to enter into these Terms on behalf of yourself and the child; and

  • you give your verifiable, informed consent for LESA to collect and use a limited amount of the child's information as described in our Children's Privacy Policy, solely to operate the Service and for anonymous, aggregated user-experience and performance measurement used to improve the quality of the Service and understand general reading capabilities and outcomes, as described in more detail in these Terms and the Privacy Policy.

1.3 Withdrawing Consent

You may withdraw your consent at any time by deleting the child’s profile, deleting the LESA account, or contacting us at hallo@lesa.is. Withdrawing consent will end the child’s ability to use the Service and will trigger our data-deletion process described in Section 9.

1.4 Eligibility and Age

LESA is generally intended for children approximately 3 to 12 years of age, with the principal current focus on children in early elementary school (approximately 6–9 years). We do not knowingly allow a child to create an account directly. A child profile may be created and used only by a parent or guardian. If we learn that a child has created an account without the necessary authorisation, we will suspend that profile and follow our data-deletion procedure.

  1. Account Creation and Legal Compliance

2.1 Adult-Only Access

LESA is set up so that only an adult can create and manage a child’s profile. You sign in with your Apple or Google account, and the sensitive parent controls are protected behind a parent PIN (or your device’s own authentication). LESA does not create or store passwords. We may strengthen these adult-only safeguards over time as best practices and regulations evolve.

2.2 The Parent Account

The Parent account is the master account for use of LESA. You sign in to it with your Apple or Google account — LESA does not create or store passwords. The Parent account controls parental settings, child profiles, and access to progress data. You agree to:

  • provide accurate, current, and complete information when creating the Parent account (including your real name and the valid email address associated with your Apple or Google sign-in);

  • keep that information up to date;

  • keep the Apple or Google account you use to sign in secure, keep your parent PIN confidential, and never share either with your child or any third party;

  • be solely responsible for all activity that occurs under the Parent account.

2.3 Child Profiles

Within the Parent account, you may create one or more child profiles. For each child, we ask only for the minimum information needed to personalise the experience. As shown during onboarding, this typically includes the child’s first name or chosen username, pronoun, birth month and birth year (used to recommend age-appropriate content), and a parent name. You agree that any data you enter about your child is accurate and that you have the right to provide it.

You can add multiple children to a single Parent account. Each child gets their own bookshelf, characters, difficulty setting, reading goal, streaks, and unlocked rewards.

2.4 Parental Controls

LESA provides Parent-only controls inside the app, including the ability to:

  • view, edit, or delete each child profile;

  • change difficulty levels, reading goals, and reminder times;

  • turn push notifications and activity-based emails (the weekly reading report and inactivity reminders described in the Privacy Policy) on or off;

  • adjust the reading-support features available in the app — the line-by-line “fingerprint reading” mode, the reading-focus view, and the highlight-colour option;

  • review summary progress information for each child, including reading speed, comprehension, stories read, reading routine, and reading-enjoyment feedback;

  • request access to or deletion of the child’s data.

Some controls are protected by an adult-only gate — a parent PIN or device-level authentication — to prevent children from changing them.

2.5 Account Security

You are responsible for the security of any device on which the Service is installed, for keeping your sign-in method and parent PIN secure, and for promptly notifying us at hallo@lesa.is of any unauthorised use of your account. We are not responsible for losses caused by unauthorised use of your account that you could have prevented by exercising reasonable care.

  1. Children’s Privacy, Data Use, and AI

3.1 Our Children’s Privacy Policy

Our handling of the child’s personal information is described in detail in our separate https://www.lesa.app/privacy-policy (the “Privacy Policy”). The Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms by reference and is a binding part of this agreement. By accepting these Terms, you also accept the Privacy Policy.Children’s Privacy Policy, available at

A plain-language visual guide to what LESA collects and why is also available — for parents and guardians, and, in a simplified version, for children. The guides summarise the Privacy Policy; the Privacy Policy prevails if anything differs.

3.2 Our Privacy Promises

We have designed LESA with children’s privacy as a core principle. In summary, and as described more fully in the Privacy Policy:

  • We collect only the personal information necessary to operate, secure, and improve the Service;

  • We never sell, rent, or trade the child’s personal information;

  • We do not run third-party advertising inside LESA, and we do not use the child’s personal information for behavioural or targeted advertising, profiling for marketing purposes, or to build advertising profiles;

  • We do not share the child’s personal information with third parties except for the limited operational purposes described in the Privacy Policy (for example, secure cloud hosting, push-notification delivery, email delivery, crash reporting, and customer support), and only under contracts that require those service providers to protect the information and use it only on our instructions;

  • We apply appropriate technical and organisational security measures, including encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access controls, and regular security reviews;

  • We honour your rights as the authorising adult, including the right to access, correct, or delete the child’s information, and the right to refuse further collection or use.

3.3 What We Collect About the Child

To run LESA, we process a limited set of information about the child, falling into the following categories:

  • profile data — for example, the username or first name you choose, the chosen character, pronoun and (if you choose to provide it) gender, the birth year and month you provide, the school name you may optionally provide and whether the child attends school, and reading-support preferences;

  • learning telemetry — for example, the stories the child reads, the time spent reading per session, page-turn timings used to estimate reading speed, words and characters read, comprehension and challenge answers (including correctness and time taken), quiz and story completions (with local date and time zone), and goal/streak progress — recorded per child so the Service can adapt and the Parent dashboard can show the child’s progress, and deleted with the child profile;

  • self-reported affect — the child’s simple “liked / did not like” rating of a story (used to recommend better content);

  • device and diagnostic data — limited technical information about the device, app version, and crashes, processed without persistent advertising identifiers;

  • operational data — records of consent, parental requests, email delivery and unsubscribe records, support interactions, and security events.

We do not currently process special categories of personal data such as health, biometric, or genetic data. If we ever introduce a feature that would do so (for example, optional voice-recording for fluency analysis), we will obtain separate, specific parental consent before activating it for a particular child.

3.4 How LESA Uses Artificial Intelligence

LESA Stories (our story engine). LESA uses artificial intelligence — together with editorial review by qualified educators — to produce the stories your child reads. We refer to this combined system as “LESA Stories.”

  • Stories are generated by language models in accordance with a curriculum-aligned brief (for example, vocabulary, phonics, sentence length) prepared by our editorial team in collaboration with educational partners. The model providers receive only the brief — never the child’s personal data.

  • Every story passes through automated quality and safety checks (for example, length, age-appropriateness, banned-word filtering, and adherence to our editorial guidelines) and a human editorial review before it is approved for publication. Stories that fail review are rewritten or discarded.

  • After a story is published, we look at aggregated reading and feedback data — for example, average comprehension scores and average enjoyment ratings across many children — to identify stories that consistently underperform. Our editorial team then revises, replaces, or retires those stories, and any revisions go through the same LESA Stories pipeline and the same human editorial review. This is done on aggregated patterns, never on profiling an individual child.

  • The child’s personal information and activity are not used to train or fine-tune any language model.

Other AI-supported features. LESA may also use AI to support features such as text-to-speech narration, automatic difficulty suggestions, optical character recognition for source content during story production, and translation. We will describe each AI-supported feature in the Privacy Policy as it becomes available.

3.5 Automated Decisions About Your Child

LESA may use automated processes to recommend stories, suggest a difficulty level, or flag content for moderation. These tools are designed to support — not replace — your judgement. You can review and override automated suggestions at any time. LESA does not use solely automated decision-making to produce legal effects or similarly significant effects on the child within the meaning of Article 22 GDPR.

3.6 Lawful Bases (EU/EEA/UK Users)

Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, our lawful bases are set out in full in the Privacy Policy. In short: for the child’s personal data we rely primarily on your consent as the holder of parental responsibility (Articles 6(1)(a) and 8 GDPR), together with contractual necessity for the processing that is objectively necessary to deliver the Service, and legitimate interests — subject to a documented balancing test that gives particular weight to the child’s interests — for security and service improvement. In each country where LESA is offered, we also comply with the national law implementing or supplementing the GDPR: in Iceland, Act No. 90/2018 on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data; elsewhere, the equivalent national legislation of your country of residence.

3.7 Your Rights

You may exercise the following rights at any time on the child’s behalf: (a) access the personal information we hold; (b) request correction of inaccurate information; (c) request deletion (the “right to be forgotten”); (d) request a copy of the data in a portable format; (e) object to or restrict certain processing; and (f) lodge a complaint with the data-protection supervisory authority in your country (for example, the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, Persónuvernd, the UK ICO, or the relevant EU/EEA authority). To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hallo@lesa.is.

  1. Acceptable Use and Child Safety

4.1 Our Zero-Tolerance Safety Policy

LESA is designed to be a safe place for children to learn. We operate a zero-tolerance policy against any conduct that endangers, exploits, harasses, or harms a child, or that exposes any user to inappropriate content.

4.2 Community and Conduct Rules

When using the Service, neither you nor the child may:

  • share personal information about a child or any other person, including real names beyond a first name or chosen username, addresses, phone numbers, school names, photos, or contact details;

  • post, send, upload, or create content that is sexual, violent, hateful, discriminatory, threatening, profane, frightening to children, or otherwise inappropriate for a young audience;

  • engage in bullying, intimidation, harassment, impersonation, or grooming behaviour;

  • upload viruses, malware, or other harmful code, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to LESA’s systems, the LESA Stories back-end, or any third-party service we use;

  • use the Service for any commercial, advertising, or fundraising purpose;

  • scrape, copy, reverse engineer, or use the Service or its content (including AI-generated stories) to train a competing product or any third-party machine-learning model;

  • circumvent age verification, parental controls, or any technical safeguard;

  • use the Service in violation of any applicable law.

4.3 Content Safety and Moderation

LESA is built so that children cannot enter free text or share content with anyone. Comprehension answers are multiple-choice, the child’s name or username is entered by the parent, the child selects from preset characters, and there is no messaging, no voice recording, and no public profile. Because of this, there is no child-generated content for other users to see. The stories the child reads are produced through the LESA Stories pipeline, which applies automated safety checks and banned-word filtering and a human editorial review before any story is published (see Section 3.4). If we ever add a feature that lets a child enter their own text or audio, we will add appropriate filtering and, where suitable, human moderation, and update these Terms.

4.4 Reporting Concerns

If you see or suspect any unsafe behaviour, inappropriate content, or security incident, please contact us immediately at hallo@lesa.is. We will review every report we receive and take appropriate action, which may include removing content, suspending profiles, and reporting illegal activity to law enforcement.

  1. Child Inputs

5.1 The Limited Inputs the Child Provides

The child provides only a few, non-public inputs while using LESA: the choice of a preset character, a simple “liked / did not like” rating of a story, and multiple-choice answers to comprehension questions. The child’s name or username is entered by you, the parent. LESA does not currently accept free-text writing, photographs, or voice recordings from the child.

5.2 These Inputs Are Kept Private

These inputs are private to the child’s profile and visible only to you as the authorising adult. We do not publish them, we do not feature them on social media, and we do not allow other children using LESA to discover or contact your child through them. They may be reviewed by automated systems solely to run the Service, keep it safe, and improve its educational quality, and they are deleted with the child profile.

5.3 Limited Licence to LESA

So that we can actually run the Service, you (as the legal representative of the child) grant LESA a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable licence to host, store, reproduce, and process these inputs for the limited purposes of: (a) operating, improving, and securing the Service; (b) complying with legal obligations; and (c) producing aggregated, irreversibly de-identified analytics that can no longer be linked back to the child. This licence ends when the relevant data is deleted, except for back-up copies retained for the limited periods described in the Privacy Policy.

5.4 No Use for Advertising or AI Training Without Consent

We do not use these inputs to deliver advertising. We do not sell or licence them to third parties to train AI or machine-learning models.

  1. Rewards (the “Leikvöllurinn”)

LESA includes an in-app reward system (the “Playground” or Leikvöllurinn). As the child reads stories, answers comprehension questions, keeps up reading streaks, and reaches reading goals and reading-minute milestones, they automatically unlock cosmetic rewards such as characters, outfits, and decorations. Important things to know:

  • rewards unlock automatically when the child reaches the relevant milestone; they are not bought, and there is no spendable currency or token balance;

  • rewards have no real-world monetary value and cannot be purchased with real money, exchanged for cash, or transferred to other users or accounts;

  • they are licensed to the child for personal use within LESA and are not the child’s property;

  • we may adjust or remove rewards if we reasonably believe they were unlocked through error or a fault in the Service, or if we discontinue a feature; and

  • on termination of the account, any unlocked rewards are forfeited and are not refundable.

  1. Intellectual Property

7.1 LESA Owns LESA

All content, software, source code, designs, illustrations, characters (including, without limitation, the LESA characters and mascots), audio, music, sound effects, animations, voiceovers, curriculum, lesson structure, learning algorithms, the LESA Stories engine, trademarks, service marks, logos, and the look and feel of the Service (collectively, the “LESA Content”) are owned by LESA or its licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, design, database, and other intellectual-property laws around the world.

7.2 Stories Produced With AI Assistance

Stories and related content produced through LESA Stories are written and selected from briefs prepared by our editorial team, generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence, screened against our editorial standards, and reviewed and approved by qualified human editors before publication. As between you and LESA, LESA owns the resulting stories and related content as compiled, edited, and curated, and you acknowledge that this Section 7 applies to that content in the same way as to any other LESA Content. You may use such stories only as part of the Service and under the licence granted in Section 7.3.

7.3 Your Limited Licence

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, LESA grants you and the child a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable licence to access and use the Service for the child’s personal, non-commercial educational use. This licence ends automatically if you stop complying with these Terms.

7.4 Things You Cannot Do

You may not, and you must not allow the child or any third party to:

  • copy, modify, translate, decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer, or attempt to derive the source code of the Service (except where the law expressly forbids us from prohibiting this);

  • rent, lease, sell, sublicense, distribute, or otherwise transfer the Service or any LESA Content;

  • use any LESA character, name, story, or trademark in your own products, content, or merchandise, or to train any third-party AI or machine-learning model;

  • remove, hide, or modify any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notice; or

  • use the Service to build a competing product or service.

7.5 Feedback

If you send us feedback, ideas, or suggestions about the Service, you agree that we may use them freely, without obligation or compensation, to improve LESA.

  1. Disclaimers and Limitations of Liability

8.1 Educational Outcomes

LESA is an educational tool that supports children’s reading and language development. We work hard to make it engaging and effective, but every child learns differently. We do not promise, guarantee, or warrant any specific educational, developmental, academic, or test result, reading level, comprehension score, or learning speed. Use of the Service is not a substitute for school, professional teaching, or specialist intervention where a child needs it.

8.2 Not a Diagnostic or Medical Tool

LESA is not a medical, psychological, or special-educational diagnostic tool. Features that support readers with different needs (for example, the line-by-line “fingerprint reading” mode, the reading-focus view, and the highlight-colour option) are designed to make reading more accessible — they are not designed to diagnose, screen for, or treat dyslexia, vision impairment, or any other condition. If you have concerns about your child’s reading or development, please consult a qualified educational, medical, or psychological professional.

8.3 “As Is”

Subject to applicable law, the Service is provided on an “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” basis, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, uninterrupted operation, error-free performance, or compatibility with any specific device. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, in which case the exclusions in this section apply only to the maximum extent permitted by law and statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.

8.4 No Liability for Certain Things

To the maximum extent permitted by law, LESA, its affiliates, directors, employees, contractors, and licensors will not be liable for:

  • indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages;

  • loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, data, or business opportunity;

  • damages caused by viruses or harmful code obtained through the Service that arose without our fault;

  • delays, failures, or interruptions caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control (for example, internet outages, app-store outages, AI-vendor outages, or force majeure events); or

  • educational, behavioural, or emotional outcomes of using the Service.

8.5 Liability Cap

To the maximum extent permitted by law, LESA’s total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service in any twelve-month period will not exceed ISK 50,000.

8.6 Things We Cannot Limit

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, gross negligence, willful misconduct, or any non-waivable rights you have under consumer-protection law.

  1. Account Termination and Data Deletion

9.1 You Can Leave at Any Time

You may stop using LESA, delete a child profile, or close the entire Parent account at any time and for any reason. To do so, you can:

  • use the in-app “Delete Profile” or “Delete Account” control inside the Parent settings;

  • uninstall the app from your device (note: uninstalling alone does not delete your account or data on our servers); and/or

  • contact us at hallo@lesa.is and ask us to delete the account and the child’s data.

9.2 What Happens to the Child’s Data When You Delete

When you delete a child profile or your account, we will permanently delete the personal information held in that profile or account from our active production systems within 30 days, except where we are legally required to keep certain records (for example, consent records we must keep under child-protection and data-protection law) or where information has been irreversibly aggregated and de-identified so that it can no longer be associated with the child. Encrypted back-ups will be overwritten in the ordinary course of our back-up cycle.

9.3 We May Suspend or Terminate Accounts

We may suspend or terminate the Parent account, any child profile, or your access to all or part of the Service if:

  • you or the child seriously or repeatedly breach these Terms or the Privacy Policy;

  • we reasonably believe the safety of a child or the integrity of the Service is at risk;

  • we are required to do so by law, regulation, or a binding order from a court or regulator; or

  • we permanently discontinue the Service (in which case we will give you reasonable notice).

Where it is reasonable and lawful, we will give you advance notice and a chance to fix the problem. Where the violation involves child safety, we may act immediately.

9.4 Effect of Termination

On termination of the account: (a) the licence in Section 7 ends; (b) we will delete the child’s personal data as described in Section 9.2; (c) any unlocked virtual rewards are forfeited as described in Section 6; and (d) any provisions that by their nature should survive termination (for example, intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and dispute resolution) will continue in force.

  1. Dispute Resolution and Governing Law

10.1 Try to Resolve Issues Informally First

If you have a problem with the Service, please contact us at hallo@lesa.is before starting any formal proceedings. Most issues can be sorted out quickly and without lawyers. We commit to responding to you in good faith and within a reasonable time, normally within 30 days.

10.2 Governing Law

These Terms and any dispute or claim arising out of them or the Service (including non-contractual disputes or claims) are governed by the laws of Iceland, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.

10.3 Forum

Subject to Section 10.4, you and LESA agree that the District Court of Reykjavík (Héraðsdómur Reykjavíkur) will be the court of first instance for any dispute or claim that is not resolved informally, with appeal rights as provided by Icelandic law.

10.4 Consumer Rights

Nothing in this Section 10 deprives you of any mandatory consumer-protection right that you have under the law of the country in which you live, including the right to bring proceedings before the courts of that country and to rely on local consumer-protection rules. Consumers in Iceland may contact the Consumers’ Association of Iceland (Neytendasamtökin) or the Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa) for assistance. EU and EEA residents may also use the European Commission’s online dispute-resolution platform at https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.

  1. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the law, our features, or our business practices. If we make material changes, we will give you reasonable advance notice (for example, by email to the address on file or a prominent notice in the app) before the changes take effect. Where required by law, we will ask you to renew your consent. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you can stop using the Service and delete the account at any time.

  1. General

12.1 Entire Agreement

These Terms (together with the Privacy Policy) form the entire agreement between you and LESA regarding the Service, and supersede any prior agreements.

12.2 No Waiver

If we do not enforce a right or provision under these Terms, that does not mean we have waived it.

12.3 Severability

If a court or arbitrator decides that any provision of these Terms is unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect, and the unenforceable provision will be replaced by an enforceable provision that comes closest to the intent of the original.

12.4 Assignment

You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations to an affiliate or a successor in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring, or sale of assets, provided your rights are not materially diminished.

12.5 Force Majeure

Neither party is responsible for delay or failure to perform caused by circumstances reasonably beyond its control, including natural disasters, war, civil unrest, government action, internet or telecommunications failures, app-store outages, AI-vendor outages, or pandemics.

12.6 Languages

These Terms are originally drafted in Icelandic and may be made available in additional languages over time as LESA expands. Where there is a conflict between language versions, the Icelandic version will prevail, except where the law of your country of residence requires that a local-language version prevail.
